Description
Calibration Cylinders (or Calibration Columns) are used to ensure the feed pump is delivering the proper amount of solution to the system. Chemical feed pump flows can vary with changes in system pressures, suction line conditions, fluid properties, and other factors. Calibrating the pump to the exact system conditions ensures the pump is providing the expected flow. The pump settings and display can be adjusted with results from a proper calibration.
Calibration cylinders are very simple. They are available in a variety of sizes and materials to ensure compatibility with the chemical feed system. The location and piping of the calibration column will depend on the type of pump and the elevation of the system in relation to the feed tank.
Application
Calibration columns are recommended on most chemical feed systems where accurate flow is needed. Some examples:
- The pump has only a speed or stroke adjustment. Use the calibration column to create a chart of flows at various speeds (or stroke lengths) and pressures.
- Pump suction conditions will affect flow output. Usually on peristaltic pumps.
- Determine the flow rate for a specific chemical. Flow rates may vary with viscosity and density.
- Determine flow rates at a specific pressure. Typical for diaphragm pumps.
Installation
Calibration columns can be installed as part of the suction line coming into the pump. This is the preferred location for a diaphragm pump, where the pump is fed by the calibration column and then discharges into actual system pressure.
The calibration column can also be plumbed so the discharge of the pump feeds back into the calibration column. This is preferred for peristaltic pumps, which will want to pull suction from the feed tank and then discharge into the calibration column. Peristaltic pump flow is more affected by variations in suction line conditions but is generally not affected by discharge pressure differences.
