Set-Up and Controls

Powering On the A4 (Legacy) 

The A4 (legacy) is powered on when plugged into the power source.  The pump will take approximately 10 seconds to power on, boot, and be ready for service.

The A4 (Legacy) pump Main Screen will appear when powered on, showing pump status, operating mode, and any alarm or errors. 

Display and Layout 

The A4 (Legacy) has a 10-button LCD display that is easy to read and simple to use.  

All pump settings can be configured by pressing the Menu button (≡), and using the other buttons to navigate.  See Control Panel – Button Operation display below. 

The A4V Pump has the following Control Buttons: 

  • image 4MODE  – Press to scroll through run Mode. Press and Hold to configure active rune mode.  
  • image 7 PRIME  – Press to prime the pump at full speed for 60 seconds. 
  • image 6 ROLLER ROTATION – Press to change direction of roller rotation. 
  • image 5 MENU  – Press to access all settings and programming. 
  • image 3 ENTER/CONFIRMATION  – Used to confirm selections. 
  • image 9 START  – Press to Start pump.  
  • image 8 STOP – Press to Stop pump.  
  • image 10 RIGHT ADVANCE  –  When in the Menu – used to select Menu items. When on main screen – used to toggle through display of flow units or incoming signal units.  
  • image 11 UP ARROW  – When in Menu – used to toggle through menu items.  When in Manual Speed Adjust mode – used to increase the speed of the pump.  
  • image 12 DOWN ARROW – When in Menu – used to toggle through menu items.  When in Manual Speed Adjust mode – used to decrease the speed of the pump.

The A4F Pump has a different button layout than the A4V pump (see below).  A4F Controls are limited to Manual Speed Control and Remote Start/Stop function.

Configuration 

Use the Configuration to: 

  1. Choose display language (English, Spanish, German, French)  
  2. Set password.  
  3. Choose display flow rate units (% speed, RPM, ml/min, Oz/min, Liter/Hr, Gal/Hr (US), Gal/day (US).   
  4. Reset the pump to factory settings.

Input Set-up  

The A4 (Legacy) Pump (V model) includes a variety of inputs. Use the Input Setup to program the following:   

  1. Max RPM cut-off.  Allows the user to set a maximum pump speed that the pump will not exceed in any running mode, including priming the pump.  
  2. Max Flowrate. This value is pre-set from the factory for the specific tube size provided with the pump.  Used to input/change a flow value based on results from a pump calibration, or when changing to a different size tube.  Values entered here will directly affect the flow rates shown on the main screen during operation.  
  3. Input Modes.  Used to program settings for all operating modes.    
  4. Contact Input.  Used to program/activate input Contact Closure, used to start/stop the pump remotely.  Can be disabled (default), normally open, or normally closed. 
  5. Set FVS (Flow Verification System). – Used when pump is paired with a flow sensor. Activate by setting a delay time. 
  6. Set TFD (Tube Failure Detection).  Adjust sensitivity. Default is 78%, which will detect most chemicals, but will not trigger with normal water condensation. If pumping water, we recommend setting the sensitivity to 100%. TFD is a conductivity-based sensor – a chemical solution must be conductive to be sensed.  
  7. Remote/Local.  Allows user to put the pump into “Remote Only” mode, which selects one mode to run in (no other operating modes are allowed,) or “Local Only” mode, which deactivates all remote inputs.

Operating Modes  

The A4 (Legacy) Pump includes a variety of Operating Modes. Use the Mode button to select the Operating Mode of your choice:   

  1. Manual Speed Adjust.  Choose pump speed at the pump by using up or down buttons. 
  2. 4-20 mA. Pump will run at a speed proportional to the 4-20ma signal. 
  3. 0 – 10 VDC. Pump will run at a speed proportional to 0 – 10 VDC signal.  
  4. Frequency. Pump will run at a speed proportional to the Frequency signal (0-1000Hz.) 
  5. Pulse Batch. Pump will run for a set time and speed when the pump receives a programmed number of pulse signals.  
  6. Manual Cycle Adjust. Pump will run a repeated cycle. Set pump speed, On time, and Total Cycle time.  
  7. Dispensing. Pump can be programmed to pump a desired total volume amount. Set the amount to be pumped and set the pump speed.  
  8. Manual Dosing.  Pump will run at a set speed based on programmed input values for % concentration of chemical, specific gravity, process flow, and PPM. 
  9. Proportional Dosing.  Pump will run at a variable speed based on programmed input values for % concentration of chemical, specific gravity, # of pulses from flow meter, and PPM.

Pump Output Setup 

The A4 (legacy) Pump includes output signals for monitoring pump status and alarms.  Use the Output Setup to program the following:  

  1. 4- 20 mA Signal Output. (V model only) Used to send scaled output signal related to pump speed (flow) to a SCADA system.     
  2. Frequency Signal Output.  (V model only) Used to send scaled output signal related to pump speed (flow) to a SCADA system. 
  3. Output Alarms.  One Relay output and Three Contact Closure outputs (V model only) are provided, which can be programmed for a variety of triggers (see below.)

Selection (Contact energizes when) 

  • Pump Run/Stop (Motor turning -roller assembly is rotating) 
  • Monitor Input (Incoming analog or digital signal is not received or out of range)  
  • Monitor Output (Outgoing analog or digital signal not transmitted or out of range ) 
  • Monitor Run/Fail (Motor fails to respond to commands) 
  • 4-20 In Active (4-20mA mode is running) 
  • Frequency In Active (Frequency mode is running) 
  • Manual Speed Active (Manual Speed mode is running) 
  • Pulse In Active (Pulse In mode is running) 
  • Dispensing Active (Dispensing Mode is running) 
  • Manual Cycle Adjust (Manual Cycle Adjust is running) 
  • Remote Active (Remote Only mode is active) 
  • Reverse Alarm (Motor is rotating reversed/clock-wise) 
  • TFD (Tube failure is detected by sensors in the head) 
  • Both TFD/FVS (Either TFD or FVS system triggers) 
  • General Error (Motor Overload or other internal error) 

Additional System Settings (Pump Tube Timer, Power Fail Option, Maintenance Mode) 

The A4 (Legacy) Pump has a pump Tube Timer that can be accessed by pressing ENTER button and DOWN ARROW button at the same time.  Tube Timer gives the operator hours of use for the current tube installed in the pump.  The Tube Timer should be noted and reset whenever a tube change is made.  

The A4 (Legacy) Pump has a Power Fail Option that allows the user to choose whether the pump turns on in “the running state it was in when power was removed” or whether the pump powers on stopped or “OFF”.  

The A4 (Legacy) pump will go into Maintenance Mode whenever the front cover is removed. The pump is equipped with a sensor on the cover. The pump will run at a maximum of 6 rpm when in maintenance mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

A4 (Legacy) Set-Up and Controls

  • What values does the pump consider “out of range”? e.g. Is 3.9mA out of range?

    The legacy A4 pump will display mA values from 3.6mA to 20mA. Any mA signal below 3.6mA will be considered out of range and the pump will display 0mA. The A4S pump will display mA values from 4mA to 21mA. Any value between 3mA and 4mA will be displayed as 4mA. The pump will display 0mA once the signal sent drops below 3mA. 

  • Do I need to set a FVS trigger delay? what is this for?

    Yes, a trigger delay value of at least 1 second is required to enable the system. Most fluid flow sensors will not recognize gas flow. Therefore, a gas pocket in the fluid path can cause an alarm condition. A trigger alarm delay time value greater than 1 second is recommended to allow the pump to clear any gasses that may have accumulated before an alarm condition is triggered. 

  • Does the pump accept and count pulses while dispensing? And then dispense the correct amount of chemical based on the accumulated number of pulses?

    The Dispense mode in the A4/A4S operates as a local mode, which does not respond to pulses for activation. Instead, it requires manual initiation by pressing the start button on the pump. On the other hand, the Pulse batch mode enables pulse acceptance and counting for batch dispensing. It allows the user to input a specific pulse count, and once that count is reached, the A4/A4S will dispense the predetermined amount of chemical programmed in the pump.
