Description
Injectors can be added to the discharge of a chemical feed system to help provide consistent injection into water and process lines, or into open tanks.
Injectors contain check valves or ball checks to prevent back-flow into the chemical feed system. They keep discharge lines full and prevent siphoning.
Injectors are designed to inject chemicals directly into piping, tees, valves, filters, tanks, or other specialized ports. As such, there are many types and designs for injectors. Factors such as temperature, pressure, chemicals, location, pipe size, access, serviceability, and cost must be considered.
Many chemical feed pumps will include an injector with the pump. The injector provided will be constructed of materials consistent with the pump and have a connection that is the same as the pump discharge connection/fitting. This ensures chemical compatibility and ease of installation.
Application
Generally, injectors are recommended with all types of chemical feed pumps. Some typical examples:
- A peristaltic pump pumping into a pressurized water line will require an injector or other type of check valve to prevent the backflow of chemicals into the pump when a tube fails.
- When pumping into an open tank, an injector installed at the end of the discharge tubing will keep the discharge tube full and prevent possible siphoning ensuring a consistent and accurate dose.
- When injecting corrosive chemicals into a water piping, an injector can ensure the chemical is injected into the middle of the solution flow, minimizing corrosion with the piping.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation of injectors will vary greatly depending on the type of injection fitting and location.
Injectors should be checked regularly for corrosion and fouling. Injectors can quickly become clogged with particulate or develop scaling, especially when injecting sodium hypochlorite into dirty or hard water. Some injectors include springs to keep the ball seated and may need periodic placement.
Threadless Injectors
Threadless Injectors (TI) are an alternate-method injection fitting that does not require a tee or threaded pipe to install. Threadless injectors utilize a clamp to secure the injector to the piping. They are available for use on pipe sizes 1.25 – 8” dia.
Blue-White includes injectors with most chemical feed pumps. Injectors can also be purchased separately.
